Laura Howard Dash provides website design services in Raleigh and surrounding
areas. Roll over the boxes above for sample designs and descriptions.
This design uses a limited color palette and subtle interactivity
allowing the visitor to focus on
the site rather than being distracted by it. The layout is clean and consistent,
just like a contractor should be. The navigation is straightforward, with contact
information available on every page.
Rather than require a flash plugin, I chose to use JavaScript.
This eliminates wait time, allowing for an instant response to a visitor's actions. The site was
designed using CSS and DHTML, keeping the code uncluttered.
design and coding
This site was designed to serve a couple of functions.
The first was to provide information. Since this was a destination wedding,
guests needed to know everything from lodging options to dress to weather.
The second function was anticipation. The site allowed a preview of who
would be attending and how each person
saw him or herself. By asking for action shots rather than portraits,
personalities were able to shine through.
design and coding
This house was built with so much detail, a simple real
estate broker listing didn't do it justice. The owner wanted to showcase
not only the features of the house and its neighborhood, but also the talents of the
craftsmen who built it.
As this is a companion site to a traditional listing, there is
very little in the way of text. If a picture is worth a thousand
words, a picture website should fetch 1.7 million dollars.
design and coding
I wanted to give this site a
unique look incorporating NCSU colors (red, white and black) and something
specific to the department. The front image is a genetic "tree" leading
from the title to other pages. The background image is the genetic formula to determine paternity.
Having access to a good programmer was invaluable on this project. Working with a professional
freed up my efforts for the design itself.

What started as a venue to showcase photographs
gradually turned into a research project about paddling areas, wildlife
and consumption advisories.
The site has been up since 2002, and I still refer to it for links before
taking a paddling trip.

Owner T. Bayley Wharton wanted a showcase for his
craftsman style furniture business,
so I designed the site to show each type of piece on the home page.
To add interest to
the site, I also put in an extra rollover behind the contact information
for the owner showing him reflected in the torii mirror.
